Group Description: Common Ground-NYC is dedicated to the principle that all persons have equal and common rights to the Earth and its resources, and that each individual has an exclusive right to the income from his or her own labor and capital investment. We are committed to eliminating taxes on labor and capital, and taxing instead the value of land and other natural resources to pay for essential governmental services. We advocate returning Land Rent as a Citizenâ??s Dividend as well â?? as in Alaskaâ??s Oil Fund.
We believe these principles to be essential to the attainment of liberty, justice, and economic opportunity for all.
We are laying the foundation for a more just, equitable, and environmentally sustainable world, through the following methods:
â?¢ We inform the public and ourselves as to how Geoist/Georgist concepts and practices apply to current social, economic, and political issues through GroundSwell, the publication of our central organization - Common Groundâ??USA
â?¢ We participate in letter writing campaigns
â?¢ We lobby public officials and interest groups through visits, letters, background papers, online petitions, etc.
â?¢ We educate the public, media, and elected representatives on the true nature of Land and why Rent upon it belongs rightfully to the public
â?¢ We develop and present multimedia educational materials on Land and Commons issues
â?¢ We testify at public hearings and in conferences
â?¢ We advocate for fairer, more uniform Land Assessments, to be used as a basis for Land Value Taxation
â?¢ We advocate for charging royalty fees for extraction of coal, gas, oil, gold, uranium, etc.
â?¢ We advocate for charging pollution taxes
â?¢ We advocate for charging media producers for using the public airwaves & congestion fees to users of public roads/ airports/ ports
â?¢ We advocate for taxing or eliminating unproductive derivative investments based on Land
â?¢ We advocate for untaxing productive activities, reflected in Wages, Sales, and Capital (e.g. buildings)
â?¢ We network with similar groups to pass favorable legislation (or defeat unfavorable legislation) from political candidates and parties
We also discuss general economic reform and democratically decide whether to support non-core mission initiatives: e.g. public banking, monetary reform (e.g. re-issuance of debt-free U.S. Notes), Nuclear power restrictions, Fracking, etc. and then coordinate with other groups with these core missions to inform them of our unique solutions.
We invite you to join us in addressing these important issues.
We meet monthly near or at the NYC Henry George School in a pleasant but invigorating atmosphere. Meeting times posted at the school, online & to our membership e-list
