The Renewable Resource

Stupidity isn't a glitch; it's a feature. It's the grease on the wheels of every bloated bureaucracy from the DMV to the Trump White House. If natural selection actually worked, we'd be a planet of Einsteins; instead, we're a planet of people who pet bison. Why? Because stupidity is useful to the people running the show.

1. The Budget-Friendly Brain

Thinking is biologically ruinous. Your brain eats 20% of your energy just to remember where you parked. Evolution loves a bargain, and stupidity is the ultimate clearance rack. Why burn calories on "abstract reasoning" when you can just stare at a TV watching Fox News and survive on half the snacks?

2. The Joy of Not Asking "Why?"

Trump doesn't want geniuses; he wants sheep. Intelligent people notice when the Emperor is naked and probably needs a gym membership. Stupid people just follow the guy in the Red Hat. Atrocities aren't committed by monsters; they're committed by "I.C.E." who stopped thinking when they masked up.

3. The Warm, Damp Hug of the Herd

Being an individual is a great way to get punched. Groups crave conformity because it's predictable and safe. The herd punishes the guy with the "original idea" and promotes the guy who nods the hardest. Stupidity is the social glue that keeps the potluck dinner from turning into a philosophical brawl.

4. The Confidence of the Clueless

Knowledge breeds doubt. The more you know, the more you realize you're a moron. But the truly stupid are possessed by a terrifying, bulletproof certainty. Because they don't see complexity, they don't feel hesitation. They march into the propeller blades with a smile, and we call it "leadership."

5. The Dunning-Kruger Promotion

Society is wired to mistake volume for value. We follow perceived strength, and nothing looks stronger than a man who doesn't know enough to be afraid. The competent are busy second-guessing themselves, while the idiots are busy taking the corner office and the keys to the company car.

6. The Social Tax on Being Right

In Trump's world, being smart is a fireable offense. The guy who points out the iceberg is "negative"; the guy who says "full steam ahead" is a "visionary." We've organized society to protect the mediocre from the excellent, mostly because the mediocre have us outnumbered and they're very sensitive about it.

7. The Biological Numbers Game

The thinkers are busy calculating the carbon footprint of Trumps diaper, while the unthinking are already on their fifth kid. Evolution doesn't care about your PhD; it cares about who leaves the most copies behind. We are currently being outbred by people who think the "Check Engine" light is a suggestion.

Conclusion: How to Stay Sane

Stupidity is the gravity of the human condition-- it's not going anywhere. Don't waste your breath trying to fix it. Your only job is to stay awake in a world that's trying to lobotomize you. Keep thinking, keep questioning, and for God's sake, keep a few smart friends close by.

"The main difference between a genius and an idiot is that the genius eventually realizes he's surrounded-- the idiot just thinks he's leading a parade. So, keep your head down, your wit sharp, and your drinks stiff; the world isn't getting any smarter, and you're going to need a very high tolerance for the view from the back of the herd."
