#FreeOED4PA Please help me persuade the Philadelphia Free Library to provide free, remote access to the Oxford English Dictionary for all library members (see "my request" below). *Membership is free to ALL PENNSYLVANIA RESIDENTS and anyone who lives, works, pays taxes, or goes to school in Philadelphia. History of the OED:Click Here In order to have full virtual access, the Library would have to both: 1.) Subscribe to OED Online (Oxford English Dictionary), and 2.) Offer remote access for all library members. I started making this request several years ago, and on October 6, 2024, Peter Gilliver (OED Associate Editor, author of "The Making of the OED") retweeted my post. Shortly thereafter, I realized some of the old links no longer worked, so I decided to revise my petition. The following is the response I received from the Philadelphia Free Library in 2018: "No apologies necessary. The redundancy is a good thing! We love to hear from our patrons and we work as hard as we can to provide the resources you need. That being said, the OED is a very expensive database and I cannot promise that we'll purchase it. But having requests like yours on file helps justify a big purchase like that. Thanks again for reaching out." Per the OED: "The Oxford English Dictionary is the most comprehensive dictionary of the English language. It traces the development of English from the earliest records, and formally from 1150 AD, up to the present day...Many public, university, and institutional libraries across the world subscribe to the OED Online...Most libraries also offer 'remote access'. This means that, if you are a member of your local library, you can access the OED Online for free anywhere you have internet access." My request: I would like to request the Philadelphia Free Library both: 1.) subscribe to OED Online (Oxford English Dictionary), and 2.) Offer remote access for all library members. If you would like to make a similar request, the links below are beneficial. Feel free to copy/paste the request and remember that the Library would need to both subscribe to OED Online and offer remote access. Also, it can't hurt to make a verbal request by calling their Literature Department and leaving a message: 215-686-5402 Philadelphia Free Library email form:Ask a Librarian
Philadelphia Free Library snail-mail form:Request for Reconsideration of Library Materials
