We all grew up learning that the decision to drop bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a tough one, but that it saved lives of hundreds of thousands of American GIs who would have had to conduct a bloody invasion of Japan if we had not forced a surrender with a show of terrifying power. The truth is that 3 months earlier, Japan had already sent feelers that they wanted to surrender, on just the terms that were finally granted.
