My name is Ben Emery and I'm currently running for US 4th CA Congressional District.
I have been a political activist since the late 1980's. Anywhere from canvassing, attending peace rally's, participating in protests, writing letters to the editor of local newspapers, and basically being pain in the butt by not relenting on stating my opinions on issues of the day. These days I'm taking it up a notch and standing up for the same principals but as a candidate for the US House of Representatives.
I have been a physical laborer much of my life, working in the capacities as dish washer/ bus boy/ server/ short order cook/ head cook/ and manager of restaurants and have worked as a laborer in the trades of carpentry/ painting/ glazier/ laying carpet/ and as a small job handyman, which includes electrical, plumbing along with decks and fences. Along with other interesting jobs such as working in a cellar of a Napa winery and driving a truck for a cargo company in the S.F. bay area.
These jobs allowed me to earn enough money to live in the places I wanted. My theory while single, try to live in vacation destinations, so when not at work I was on vacation. This took me to the ski town of Telluride, CO and surfers paradise on Oahu, HI. For over a decade my main residence were in these two places. Riding the mountain 90 plus days a year in the winter, mainly working in the food industry leaving my days free for play. During summer season hiking among the incredible 14,000' peaked San Juan's of the Rocky Mt., trying to get 4 or 5 peaks per season. When at the ocean, I was surfing on a daily basis and just soaking up the spirit of Aloha along with the amazing people of the Hawaiian Islands. I worked as a handyman for some very fair and understanding employers who went along with my schedule, but most of all would be extremely lenient on time when good swells hit the island.
My wife and two kids are incredible. My wife is the best woman I've ever met. My two step-kids are typical teenagers but are good human beings. Both kids excel at sports, are well liked, and are basically 4.0 gpa students. We have notched a good life in our small Sierra Mt. foothill town. Surrounded by family and friends in such a beautiful part of CA is a blessing.
Now it's time to roll up our sleeves and try to change how our government works.
