My name is Sona Mirzaei and I'm a native of Los Angeles. I was primarily raised by my eccentric aunt in a household where I was allowed to be virtually independent from the time when I was still in grammar school. I took advantage my rather unorthodox upbringing and indulged my interests in the arts and sports particularly figure skating, soccer, and ballet. It was through the combination of a family crisis and my exposure to the Los Angeles art community that I began to find full expression within my own artwork, producing a series of collages, acrylics, oil paintings, etchings, and sculptures in art class. After leaving university I was recruited by Credit-Suisse, LLC -- Private Banking, laying the groundwork for a later career as an Analyst with AIG Sun America. After the chaos and mayhem of 2008/09 I left my position in financial services, shortly after realizing that if I wanted to be the type of person who wakes up every day happy and energized, that it would be necessary to fully pursue and embrace the career of my dreams by becoming a full-time artist. From that moment I decided to make a full-time commitment to pursuing my passions and endeavors as an artist.
As an artist my greatest ambition is to help others appreciate the beauty and potential of any given space, and my commitment to the process of creating visual arts is the perfect balance of exploring my creativity while also incorporating a range of what I think are universally fascinating subjects. I believe that every person should be able to live or work in an environment that provides an appealing aesthetic, and by adding unique, original artwork to a room it has the power and magic to transcend virtually any desired ambiance. The elements of diversity and variety are also regularly featured in my work combining my outlook on life with the expression of my many interests including music, classic literature, world history, international politics, philosophy, mythology, cinema, fashion, sociology, and travel.
To guarantee unique quality I rely on my intuition to guide my work so there is always an element of free spirited spontaneity in each piece. From the array of different colors from bold and bright to chromatic and muted, to the variety of materials used, all of these factors give insight into the mood I am trying to create for each piece, in addition to serving as an outlet for displaying my eclectic tastes. I especially like working with mix media because I find it challenging to work with several different mediums while still making each piece something that expresses my ultimate vision. My interest in fashion and wearable art is frequently displayed when I work on a mix media piece because I truly enjoy finding fun ways to incorporate items like fabrics, stones, pearls, metal flakes, butterflies, beads, and sequins into my paintings. Having the opportunity to combine so many elements at once makes mix media pieces a large part of why I love the process of creating art because they give me a feeling of being able to indulge in elaborate visual fantasies.
I am currently working on my new collection and am optimistic that it will be completed by this summer. My day-to-day life will always be ever so present in my work and I look forward to carrying on with my artistic journey. I intend to pursue my artistry in a variety of forms and venues including public art, mix media, important causes, figurative art, and my ongoing I am My Art series. My daily objectives are to better myself for humanity, to enjoy life -- carpe diem, and to continue to share my artistic vision with the world.
