The Expansion of Catholic-Owned Medical Centers Threatens Medical Choices for All Catholic medical organizations are buying secular, non-profit institutions in many parts of the nation. Ownership allows conservative bishops to impose their faith-based "Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services" over everyone who come under the influence of Catholic hospitals. Patients are affected whether they are Catholic or not. Dogmas irrelevant by non-Catholics now matter - they inhibit choices.

Indulgences Are Ludicrous But Entertaining; Other Policies of the Catholic Church Are Hazardous to Our Personal Freedoms As in the Middle Ages, indulgences entail the promise of some vague level of less torture after you die, unless of course you find yourself sentenced to hell. Then you are doomed to unspeakable, eternal miseries beyond imagining. Indulgences do no good for the souls cast into the ghastly holocaust of holocausts. Details are not available as to how much less burning in Purgatorial flames is associated with most indulgences.

The Colonoscopy Is the Dying Canary in the Toxic American Mine We Call a Health Care System The colonoscopy gets my vote as the biggest scam in modern medicine. We should stop using the term colonoscopy - "colonoscamy" is more descriptive and appropriate. Given the abuses and waste well documented about the U.S. health care system, this is a searing indictment. Colonoscopies are marketed by fear tactics, not unlike religions. Consumers should consider giving this procedure a pass, unless well indicated otherwise.

Pat Robertson's Marital Advice: Pretty Bad But Consider How Surprising That It Was Not So Much Worse What advice would you offer a woman, someone you don't know, who on the phone asks, ""I've been trying to forgive my husband for cheating on me. We have gone to counseling, but I just can't seem to forgive, nor can I trust. How do you let go of the anger? How do you trust again? God says to forgive, but it's been so hard to do. I want to forgive, so we can get on with our lives." Consider what advice Pat Robertson offered.

Transforming the Nature of Worksite Wellness: AWR 645 May 2013 Workplace wellness is boring, illness focused and timid. What's more, workplace wellness is not even wellness - it's all a mishmash of medical management, risk reduction, prevention, employee assistance and preaching against the secular sins and comeuppances of bad behaviors. A new approach is outlined, one focused on reason, exuberance, athleticism and liberty/personal freedoms.

Could America Become A Theocracy? Steven Jonas Thinks So - And Wrote "The 15% Solution" to Prove It In this context along comes Steven Jonas' fictional non-fiction novel, The 15% Solution. Jonas describes how the Republican Religious Right, over a period of several decades, transformed America into a fascist Christian nation. Horrific stuff, but plausible enough based upon factual events commencing with the Reagan Administration in 1981 to the present time.
