AlterNet Crooks and Liars Daily Kos (Note: these articles are from RSS News Feeds websites, and are deleted after 30 days, June 11, 2025 at 8:05 PM EDT While all eyes are on H.R. 1 ("The One Big Beautiful Bill Act"), another major piece of legislation is scheduled for a vote this week. And one Republican leader isn't fully confident that it will pass despite the GOP having a majority in the House of Representatives. Axios reported Wednesday that Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), who is chair of the House Republican Conference, made the remark while urging her GOP counterparts in the U.S. Senate to not fundamentally alter the House version of H.R. 1 if they hoped to get it signed into law by the target date of early July. While telling Senate Republicans that she understood that the upper chamber of Congress had to get its "fingerprints" on the legislation, they should "touch very lightly" to avoid a time-consuming conference process. June 11, 2025 at 7:11 PM EDT Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has lashed out at the White House, accusing it of "immaturity" and "petty vindictiveness" after being told he and his family could no longer attend the traditional bipartisan White House picnic, CNN reported Wednesday. The Kentucky Republican, known for his libertarian views and tough stance on federal spending, has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump's expansive policy proposal. June 11, 2025 at 6:56 PM EDT President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have both been spending the last few weeks renaming U.S. military property. One military expert is now offering a theory about what may be motivating them. The New York Times recently reported that the Trump administration has aimed to re-christen military bases whose Confederate names were removed under former President Joe Biden's tenure, but choosing different namesakes. One example is making the namesake of Fort Lee in Virginia not Confederate General Robert E. Lee, but for Private Fitz Lee, who was a Black soldier in the 19th century. And while the Biden administration changed the name of Fort Bragg (named for Confederate general Braxton Bragg) to Fort Liberty, the Trump administration in February reverted it back to Bragg -- but with the namesake changed to that of Private First Class Roland Bragg, who served in World War II. June 11, 2025 at 6:06 PM EDT Concerns have been raised over U.S. Customs and Border Protection's announcement that it will be making its presence known at FIFA Club World Cup matches nationwide, stating it will be "suited and booted" for the events, NBC Miami reported Tuesday. The agency, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security and is led by Secretary Kristi Noem, announced via social media that it's prepared to "provide security for the first round of games." June 11, 2025 at 5:45 PM EDT Republicans in Congress have a ticking time bomb that's motivating them to not stall too long in their efforts to pass President Donald Trump's so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." NBC News reported Wednesday that top Republicans in both the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate are eager to pass H.R. 1 -- the 1,037-page tax and spending bill currently being debated in the Senate -- before the United States is scheduled to exceed its statutory borrowing limit in mid-July. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told the network "there is no plan B" if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling in the next six weeks. Presumably, a backup plan should Republicans fail to increase the debt ceiling in a party-line bill would be to make concessions to Democrats in order to win over enough support from the opposition party to pass the legislation. June 11, 2025 at 4:44 PM EDT A new report has claimed that there was a calculated effort to control the optics of President Donald Trump's visit to Fort Bragg, North Carolina on Tuesday, with selective screening of soldiers for both political views and physical appearance. In his address, Trump targeted California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), former President Joe Biden and the media, urging military personnel to boo reporters in attendance as he lashed out at what he called "fake news." June 11, 2025 at 4:08 PM EDT The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate is preparing to make its own changes to President Donald Trump's massive domestic policy legislation, and some of those tweaks may include scrapping some of Trump's biggest 2024 campaign promises. According to a Wednesday report in the New York Times, GOP lawmakers in the upper chamber of Congress are making new efforts to pay for the trillions of dollars in tax cuts included in the bill (which are overwhelmingly tilted in favor of the wealthiest Americans). One provision Senate Republicans may axe in order to offset those tax cuts is Trump's proposal to not tax overtime hours -- something he made a hallmark of his third bid for the presidency. June 11, 2025 at 3:23 PM EDT A roofing company owner in Florida Keys who voted for President Donald Trump is now facing "a little buyer's remorse" after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained one-third of his workforce. Vincent Cardina, whose team included six Nicaraguan workers, said he never expected his employees -- whom he considered friends -- to be targeted, as he believed the Trump administration's immigration policies would focus on deporting criminals. June 11, 2025 at 11:35 AM EDT President Donald Trump is vigorously defending his use of U.S. Marines and federalized California National Guard troops in response to tense protests in Downtown Los Angeles. And he is doing so despite the objections of California Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, both of whom believe he is making a tense situation worse. Many Trump critics are saying that while Newsom has every right to deploy California National Guard troops if he decides it is necessary, the president is crossing a dangerous line by deploying them at the federal level. June 11, 2025 at 10:37 AM EDT In a large ad for the Sunday edition of the New York Times, Walmart heiress Christy Walton urged Americans to "mobilize" and take part in large protests on Saturday, June 14 -- the day President Donald Trump is holding a military parade in Washington, DC. Walton attacked the parade as wildly inappropriate, arguing that Trump is not a "king," but an elected official. June 11, 2025 at 10:18 AM EDT The Wall Street Journal is reporting some of the biggest names in finance are sounding the klaxon horn on decades of U.S. off-the-hinges borrowing. "Ray Dalio, founder of the hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, has warned of a debt crisis akin to an 'economic heart attack.' Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, is predicting a breakdown in financial markets," the Wall Street Journal reports. June 11, 2025 at 9:25 AM EDT In an article published by the Washington Post on Tuesday afternoon, June 10, journalists John Hudson and Alex Horton reported that the Trump Administration -- as part of its mass deportations programs -- "is preparing to begin the transfer of potentially thousands of foreigners who are in the United States illegally to the U.S. military base in Guanta'namo Bay, Cuba." According to Hudson and Horton, "It is far from clear whether the facilities there can accommodate 9000 new detainees, an influx that would amount to a massive increase from the several hundred migrants moved to and from the base earlier this year. But Trump Administration officials say the plan is necessary due to a need to free up capacity at domestic detention facilities, which have become overcrowded amid President Donald Trump's pledge to implement the biggest deportation of undocumented migrants in American history." |
