Clips of the week: Boo to Trump's goons and other GOP jerks

It's been another "I can't believe Donald Trump is still president" week! GOP lawmakers and officials faced well-deserved public backlash, while Trump played dress-up diplomat for European leaders at the White House. And it's all on video!

Caribbean Matters: Remembering the slave trade and its abolition

Caribbean Matters is a weekly series from Daily Kos. Hope you'll join us here every Saturday. If you are unfamiliar with the region, check out Caribbean Matters: Getting to know the countries of the Caribbean . Given the racist, anti-history bent of our current government and its concerted efforts to whitewash and erase history""especially Black history""I have zero expectation that there will be an official acknowledgement of the fact that Aug. 23 is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition.

Trump has taken over DC. Do Democrats give a damn?

As Washington, D.C., enters a third week of federal occupation ordered by Donald Trump, Democratic Party leaders have been absent from demonstrations against the president's latest power grab. Residents of the nation's capital have seen armed federal agents deployed to the streets of their city to purportedly combat a nonexistent crime problem. National Guard troops have been deployed to locations like subway stations, clearly in sight of Capitol Hill staffers and likely the politicians that they work for. The takeover is a very visible attempt by Trump to exercise power in an authoritarian style.

If DC didn't look like a military occupation yet, it will now

After saying just last week that the National Guard troops deployed to Washington would not be carrying guns, the Pentagon on Friday admitted what we all knew was coming""of course they will be carrying guns.  It was always inevitable that President Donald Trump would seek to ratchet up the pressure on the residents of the nation's capital, who he loathes for being insufficiently white, insufficiently conservative, and insufficiently in thrall to his cult of personality. Part of how you know this was a foregone conclusion is that the administration isn't even pegging the reversal to any particular incident. Nope, just a vague statement from a Pentagon official saying that "members supporting the mission to lower the crime rate in our Nation's capital will soon be on mission with their service-issued weapons, consistent with their mission and training."

Trump speaks candidly about longtime friendship with Epstein""just kidding

President Donald Trump's Oval Office press conference on Friday was once again derailed by a question about his child sex-trafficking former pal, Jeffrey Epstein.  "I couldn't care less," Trump said when asked about the peculiar release of Epstein-related documents by his Justice Department before reverting to one of his tired tropes.

California voters are all about sticking it to Republicans

California voters overwhelmingly support redrawing the state's congressional map to fight back against the GOP's redistricting move in Texas, a new poll released Friday found. And it's a good sign for Democrats' chances at staving off Republicans' attempts to rig the 2026 midterms. The UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll conducted for the Los Angeles Times found that 48% of registered voters said they would vote for the ballot measure, as opposed to 32% who are opposed.

Watch Trump get creepy as he fantasizes about invading Chicago next

President Donald Trump held an unhinged Oval Office press conference on Friday where he lied about the success of his authoritarian takeover of Washington. Then he upped the ante by targeting Chicago for his next military invasion, calling it a "mess" and claiming that Black women are begging him to turn their city into a police state. "The people in Chicago," Trump said, as Vice President JD Vance looked on, "are screaming for us to come now""wearing red hats just like this. But they're wearing red hats. African American ladies, beautiful ladies are saying, 'Please, President Trump, come to Chicago, please.'"
