Trump just deployed troops to California""where my son is in the National Guard

I served in the U.S. Army 36 years ago. And my son""who's had opportunities I never did as a Salvadoran immigrant""chose to follow in my footsteps, joining the California National Guard. After spending a year in the Middle East, he returned home and was activated to help in the aftermath of the wildfires that devastated Southern California in January. He was stationed in Altadena, a hard-hit, working-class city, where he did what the Guard is meant to do: help people in crisis.

Despite calling California a war zone, it's business as usual for Trump

For a man claiming that Los Angeles has descended into such violent chaos that it requires the immediate and illegal deployment of federal troops, President Donald Trump sure seems to have time to fixate on trivial things. This is not a man behaving like the government is on war footing, but instead is the same old Trump, flitting from grievance to grievance. And he's not the only one.  On Monday, when Trump was taking questions about reporters from the California protests, he was asked about his decision to send active-duty Marines to Los Angeles. That is a very important question, given that it is unprecedented and illegal. But Trump used the opportunity to bash California's high-speed rail project connecting Los Angeles with San Francisco.

House Republicans demand changes to budget bill they already voted for

The House Freedom Caucus, a group of Republicans who purport to care about the deficit but voted in favor of the deficit-busting "One Big, Beautiful Bill Act," is now retroactively demanding changes to the legislation. In an unsigned 10-page letter obtained by Punchbowl News, the group of self-described "House conservatives" is demanding that the Senate""which is having its turn to mark up the bill""make more cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, strip out the expanded state and local tax deduction that a group of New York and California Republicans put in the bill, and take out a provision that bans regulations on artificial intelligence, among other things.

Rep. LaMonica McIver indicted over visit to New Jersey immigration center

U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted Tuesday on federal charges alleging she impeded and interfered with immigration officers outside a New Jersey detention center while Newark's mayor was being arrested after he tried to join a congressional oversight visit at the facility. Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba announced the grand jury indictment in a post on X.

Florida agency threatens the press to protect shady DeSantis charity

Apparently, Florida's Department of Children and Families employs no one who understands the First Amendment. That's the only logical explanation for the letter it sent to the Orlando Sentinel, telling the paper to cease and desist reporting on the shady charity spearheaded by Gov. Ron DeSantis' wife, Casey. The paper hasn't published the story yet, but FDCF nonetheless accuses it of threatening foster families to make negative statements about the beleaguered Hope Florida Foundation.

Watch this Democrat rip Republicans over 'anti-life' abortion bill

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California did not mince words during a House Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday as he slammed a renewed Republican effort to repeal the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, which has protected abortion providers and women seeking reproductive health care for over three decades. "There's nothing pro-life about this legislation. Actually, it's anti-life because it stands with, and in alignment for, people who would bring harm to women," Swalwell said, referring to the repeal legislation introduced by Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas.

Thanks, Trump! Criminals are now impersonating ICE agents

Police in Philadelphia are looking for a man posing as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who robbed an auto repair shop. The crime is the latest in a string of incidents in multiple cities involving people posing as ICE personnel in order to commit crimes. Fox 29 reported on Monday that according to police, the man posed as an officer while wearing a tactical vest and a shirt labeled "security." He claimed to be an ICE agent and zip tied the wrists of the cashier, a woman originally from the Dominican Republic who has been a legal U.S. resident for over 18 years.

But when a post is a stealth announcement of Texas' newest attack on abortion disguised as a true crime story about a bad boyfriend, that thing is going to have legs.  Monday's Facebook post announced the arrest of Justin Anthony Banta, a 38-year-old IT employee at the U.S. Department of Justice.
