Vincent James music evangelist and National Holiday Creator
Vincent James has created a special day of the year and a week of the yearfor music for kids. That got me thinking of how late congressman John Conyers created Martin Luther King day as a national holiday an endeavor he told me was among those he was most proud of, which took him years to accomplish.
So my goal talking with Vincent was to explore what steps he's taken to create such a day, with the idea that there are probably lots of people out there who want to make special days for special reasons.
Vincent is the author of two books, 88 Ways Music Can Change Your Life
He and his wife have created Kids Music Day, which occurs in October,
And, Teach Music Week, which occurs the third week in March - the 15th to 21st this year.
His website is KeepMusicAlive.org
Another way his organization promotes music is with "instrument petting zoos" which have received foundation funding.
One of the steps they took to support the Teach Music Week was to reach out to celebrities. The breakthrough celebrity who offered to help was Julie Andrews and then Matthew Morrison (Glee, Broadway) who became their first celebrity spokesperson.
I asked him to share one of the stories about how music changes people's lives.
