Asking whether atheism is a religion ignores more important questions. Atheism is no more a religion than theism. Both are religious opinions on the existence of "God." What makes a theistic or atheistic worldview into a religion is the content that comes with it. On that premise, we might think of the "New Atheists" as religious.

This article begins an exploration of how an "American orthodoxy," built on the expansion of the promise inherent in the founding documents, has been unraveling since the end of the Cold War. This unraveling has picked up steam with efforts at the state level, especially to restrict abortion access and voting rights.
