"Netanyahu wants to contest the election on the ostensible unsuitability of anyone but him to lead Israel, but his main rival is increasingly seen as a better alternative - serious about the national interest, neither slick nor cynical, and untainted by the worst leadership failure in the country's history."

Any leader will have to defend Israel, even more than Netanyahu, hopefully. But that includes drafting the ultra-orthodox, not exempting them to preserve his own coalition power. It includes reforming their schooling, which is now worse than almost any other major nation's, so they can fully participate in society, not allowing Israel to drift into becoming a theocracy.
