US President Trump issues recent threat on Iran
Let's not mince words. A US war initiated against Iran will be a catastrophe not only for regional stability in the Middle East but horrendous for the entire world.
US President Trump has sent a huge naval armada into the Persian Gulf directly off the coast of Iran. It includes the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and support ships that have been conducting naval and air drills in the area.
Trump has demanded Iran "agree to a 'zero enrichment' policy regarding its uranium enrichment". [1]
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said, "Iran will not give up its uranium enrichment capacity even under the threat of war." He called Tehran's "enrichment a legal right rooted in sovereignty and national dignity".
Going further he said, "Why have we insisted so strongly on enrichment and continue to do so and why are we not willing to give it up, even if war is imposed on us? Because no one has the right to tell us what we should have and what we should not have."
He also said, "Iran is open to addressing concerns over its nuclear program and building trust on the matter. If there are any questions or ambiguities regarding peaceful objectives of Iran's nuclear program we will respond and remove ambiguities, and the only way is through diplomacy."
At least there have been indirect talks between Iran and the US in Oman. The Iranian foreign minister called the negotiations a "good beginning", stressing they focused exclusively on nuclear. US officials indicated "they wanted to discuss Iran's ballistic missiles and support for its regional allies".
Trump has long said, "Iran must accept a 'zero enrichment' policy" and "Washington could resort to a military option if diplomacy fails."
Iran has recently had protests that initially stemmed from economic grievances and the collapse of its currency creating high inflation. The demonstrations became violent with Iran accusing the US and Israel of stirring up the crowds. Western media has said thousands of people have been killed by the authorities without substantiating how they got their figures.
If the US does launch a war with Iran by attacking its nuclear facilities Iran most assuredly will retaliate. It could block the Strait of Hormuz where 20% of the world's oil traverses. This would affect oil prices worldwide.
